If you would prefer to ‘go over the sea to Skye’, a ferry operates between Glenelg and Kylerhea on a regular basis from Easter to Mid-October. This route is particularly rewarding in terms of scenery and is a good way of avoiding the beaten track. Contact them at info@skyeferry.com
Other larger ferries, all operated by Caledonian MacBrayne can be contacted using the following numbers:
General enquiries: 0800 066 5000
Uig (Isle of Skye) to Tarbert (Harris) or Lochmaddy (North Uist): 01470 542 219

The Plockton train station is a 10-15 minute walk from the Plockton Inn. Trains run daily between Kyle of Lochalsh and Inverness. There is no ticket station on the platform but it is possible to buy tickets on the train and up to date train times can be found on the ScotRail website (www.scotrail.co.uk) or free ScotRail app.
The nearest bus station is in Kyle of Lochalsh and times and tickets can be found on the Scottish City Link website (www.citylink.co.uk) . From Kyle you can get buses to Skye, Inverness, Fort William and Glasgow.
Before setting off for a longer journey we advise checking the Traffic Scotland website (www.traffic.gov.scot) for up to date road information.
Our team members are happy to help you plan your journey.
At the Plockton Inn we have a regular roster of events throughout the year. These can include local and touring musicians playing anything from acoustic guitar classics to traditional folk music live in our bar. We have also have a regular quiz night, that is popular with guests and locals alike.
If you’d like to know what’s going on during your stay, please speak to a member of the team.
The best way to get to know Plockton is to explore it on foot. Following the road along the shore you’ll pass the village shop, Plockton Stores, and get fantastic views of the bay looking across to the Crags and Duncraig Castle.
If the tide is right you can cross the causeway by the red roofed newspaper shop and walk down to the Main Pier or keep heading along the road, past the village hall and loop around along the back Brae. If you keep following this back road until it branches downwards to the left it will bring you back to the Inn. Or if you continue to the right it will take you over the hill and will come out near the open air church and war memorial.
For longer walks we are happy to guide you towards the rhododendron covered path to Duncraig Castle or how to get to the mast on the top of the Crags.
The newspaper shop also sells hand knitted gifts and Meghan’s, on the corner by the shore, sells ice cream and gifts. The Studio just a few doors down sells art, books and gifts.
Our team will be delighted to help you plan local trips and activities. Calum’s Seal Trips, takes you on a trip to visit these inquisitive characters, explore the coast with Plockton Sea Kayaks or try paddle boarding with Scotland Stand Up Paddle Board Company.
Near to Plockton, the village of Duirinish has a small café and is where Highland cows can sometimes be seen wandering through the village and Balmacara has a gift shop called Home in the Highlands.
Kyle of Lochalsh is the largest village in the area and has many amenities including a small Coop supermarket, pharmacy, gift shop, filling station, car charging points, post office, bank and more.
Kyle is also the gateway to Skye with much to explore. There are lots of small shops, galleries and places to eat on Skye as well as spectacular natural attractions such as The Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock, the Fairy Pools, Neist Point and the Quiraing. Other activities include Third Ridge indoor climbing wall, Las Port Righ cinema and A.C.E. Target Sports.
We are also pleased to suggest places to visit and scenic drives.
